This is Your Brain on Mental Math

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

We’ve all seen bright students failing at math because they don’t have the mental math skills to solve problems with confidence. Cognitive studies show that strong mental math ability developed through purposeful instruction in the classroom leads to a much stronger number sense and comfort in working with numbers. Children acquire new languages more readily than adults. Mathematics is itself a kind of language, with its own rules and grammatical structure. Why not let them become fluent in the language of mathematics when they are most ready to learn? Join Gael James, Outreach Manager for the Canadian charity JUMP Math, as she shares how to teach and integrate mental math in a way that engages the students and builds both numeracy and confidence. Participants will leave with daily mental math strategies, games, and resources.
